Iran-linked hacker group Handala Hack Team claimed responsibility for the breach. The group posted extensive material on its website which included photos and other documents including resume of Kash Patel. FBI confirmed the breach but moved quickly to downplay its significance. Israeli cybersecurity expert says the operation is part of Iran's strategy to embarrass U.S. officials. It is not unusual for foreign hackers to target senior officials’ personal emails. Hackers famously broke into Hillary ‌Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’spersonal Gmail account. The FBI confirmed Mr. Patel’s emails had been targeted.
